Narrowing
80%
Blood flow
  1. 01

    A narrowed artery

Fatty plaque builds up inside a coronary artery. Less blood reaches the heart muscle — often felt as chest pain or breathlessness on exertion.

  2. 02

    Angiography finds it

A contrast dye released through a thin catheter shows the artery on X-ray — exactly where it is narrowed, and by how much.

  3. 03

    A wire crosses the blockage

Through a small puncture at the wrist or groin, a fine wire is guided across the narrowing, carrying a folded balloon and stent.

  4. 04

    Balloon and stent open it

The balloon inflates, pressing the plaque into the artery wall and expanding the stent — a tiny metal mesh scaffold.

  5. 05

    Blood flows again

The balloon is withdrawn. The stent stays, holding the artery open so blood reaches the heart muscle freely.

05 — Questions

Before you call

Still unsure about something? Our coordinators are happy to talk it through.

01When should I see a cardiologist?

Book a consultation if you experience chest discomfort, breathlessness on mild exertion, palpitations, unexplained fatigue, giddiness or swelling in the feet. A preventive check is also advisable from age 40, or earlier if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a smoking history or a family history of heart disease.

02Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

We recommend booking ahead so your waiting time stays short — call us or send the appointment form. If you have chest pain or severe breathlessness right now, do not wait for an appointment — call 108 for an ambulance.

03What should I bring to my first visit?

Carry a photo ID, all previous prescriptions and discharge summaries, recent ECG, echo or angiography reports and films, and a current list of the medicines you take with their dosages. If you have insurance, bring your policy or TPA card as well.

04How long does recovery after angioplasty take?

Most patients are discharged within 24 to 48 hours of an uncomplicated angioplasty and return to desk work in about a week. Your cardiologist will set a personalised plan covering medication, diet, activity and a structured cardiac rehabilitation programme.
